Riley Benko, PsyD
I am a MD Psychology Associate working under the supervision of Drs. Kett and Lewin. I have experience in a variety of settings working with children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of concerns including crisis management, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, trauma, grief, behavioral or relationship concerns, and building self-esteem. I am trained in and employ a primarily cognitive behavioral approach, though often utilize an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing techniques and skills from a variety of theories that may be of use to clients. I place emphasis on developing flexibility and exploring new perspectives, leaving ample time to process the emotions that accompany such change. I often employ an easy manner and an advocating style that fosters motivation and independence. It is my hope that our collaborative relationship will leave you feeling both safe and empowered. Lastly, I also provide psychological assessment, whether it be to better inform therapy or to offer treatment recommendations.
My clinical experience includes working in community mental health, Veterans’ Affairs, and inpatient psychiatric hospital settings. I have experience doing mental health outreach with community organizations and taught undergraduate students for several years. I earned my B.A. in Psychology from Illinois Wesleyan University and earned my Psy.D. from Georgia Southern University. I am an enthusiastic consumer of psychological research and completed my dissertation on stigma associated with mental illness. I am a strong advocate of mental health services in general and believe not only in dispelling stigma, but also in building a stronger mental health system, particularly for those who may not have ample access to services.
About the Doc outside the office
A transplant from Chicagoland, my fiancé and I currently enjoy living in Baltimore and learning all Maryland has to offer. In my free time, I love painting and creating art. I also spend my time running or exercising, exploring Baltimore with friends, or going for a hike with the dogs on a nice day. Chicagoland sports teams hold a special place in my heart, but so too do 90s actions films, cooking, retro video games, and well-narrated audiobooks.
Dr. Benko works in the Linthicum office.
