Melissa Hendricks, PhD
I am a licensed psychologist in Maryland. I have extensive experience working with individuals and families to treat adjustment, anxiety, mood, and behavioral concerns. I often take a skills-based approach to help individuals and families learn strategies to improve functioning and well-being. I also offer parent-training services to address common developmental and behavior concerns, such as toileting, tantrums, sleep, eating, separation, tics/habits.
I use behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, and motivational strategies to address presenting concerns and optimize functioning at home, school, work, and in the community. I value a pragmatic, collaborative approach to treatment. I will provide support and help you learn new skills to take care of yourself and balance life’s demands. I engage you in all steps of the treatment process, including goal-setting, planning, skills training, and evaluation to make sure we are achieving your goals. I place great emphasis on coordinating care with your other health care providers and community systems to ensure integrated behavioral care. I am trained in dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, and habit reversal therapy.
In addition, I specialize in working with individuals and families to promote adjustment to chronic or acute medical conditions—my approach recognizes the interplay between physical and psychosocial health and wellbeing. Together we will work to optimize your physical, behavioral, emotional, and social health; we will help you find ways to make living with your medical conditions easier and treat co-occuring stress, anxiety, mood, and behavioral concerns and disorders. For these specific services, I see patients at Waypoint Behavioral Health.
I have worked in a variety of medical and mental health settings, including a university based community mental health center and anxiety clinic, children’s hospitals, and pediatric medical subspecialty clinics. I have held faculty positions, supervisory, and leadership roles at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. I am a professional member of the American Psychological Association, the Maryland Psychological Association, the Society for Pediatric Psychology, and the American Diabetes Association. My undergraduate work was completed at McDaniel College. I hold a Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University with specialization in Child Clinical Psychology and Behavioral Medicine. I completed an internship and two years of fellowship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in pediatric psychology. I have been involved in several research projects, presented at numerous national and international conferences, and co-authored several psychology journal articles.
About the Doc Outside the Office
I was born and raised in the Annapolis area, where I currently reside with my husband and two young children. I love the work that I am able to do each day, and I recognize importance of balancing life’s many demands to optimize self-care and well-being. For me that balance comes from taking opportunities to spend time on the water, stay active, cheer from the sidelines for my kids and family in their various activities, read, bake, and enjoy the company of my friends and family.
Dr. Hendricks works only in the Annapolis location. Current patients may CLICK HERE to schedule online.
