Alex Abramowicz

I am a licensed psychologist in Maryland and have experience working in outpatient mental health clinics and various college counseling centers within the DMV. I work with adolescents and adults with concerns including depression, anxiety, identity concerns, adjustment and life transitions, grief and loss, relationship issues, and finding meaning and purpose in life. I am particularly passionate discussing and exploring multicultural concerns related to race, gender, LGBTQ identity, socioeconomic status, and religious affiliation and nationality. I employ an integrative approach to mental health and wellness, utilizing psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral therapy, and humanistic or existential theories. I believe that lasting change is driven by a warm therapeutic relationship, emotional attunement, and the development of insight. As a therapist, my goal is to help you work toward a state of awareness, a sense of empowerment, and a feeling of fulfillment.

Professional Experience

My clinical experience includes work in community mental health and university counseling centers. I earned my B.S. in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. I received my M.Psy. and finally Psy.D. from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.  Most recently, I worked as a college counselor at Georgetown University and George Mason University, respectively. I have used my position to advocate for students who hold minority statuses, particularly individuals of marginalized populations.

Life Outside the Office

I was born and raised in a small town just outside of Philadelphia, PA, and am thrilled that I am now starting to plant some roots in the DC area. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching TV and movies, as well as spending time with family and friends. I will also attempt to play sports, with soccer and basketball being my two favorites. I also love finding new places to eat wherever I live and work, and I’m always happy to hear about new recommendations! I also have a dog, Bec, who is my first pet but one that I have absolutely fallen in love with.
