Donna Ticknor

I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist through the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and a licensed physician in both Maryland and the District of Columbia. I have extensive experience providing psychiatric diagnostic assessments, prescribing psychiatric medications and providing psychotherapy to  adults and older adolescents with a wide range of mental health concerns and severity including: anxiety, depression, bipolar spectrum disorders, stress and trauma, ADHD, insomnia, personality disorders, eating disorders and psychotic illnesses. I enjoy providing personalized care to my diverse population of patients and encourage a collaborative approach to treatment.

Professional Experience

I received my B.A. in Psychology from the University of Kansas and my medical training from the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine in Kansas City. I completed my psychiatric residency training at George Washington University in 2002, serving the final year as Chief Psychiatry Resident. During my residency, I developed a psychiatric training rotation at the Gallaudet University Mental Health Clinic, providing services to d/Deaf students and community members. Upon completing residency, I maintained a private practice and continued as a treating psychiatrist at Gallaudet MHC, while also supervising the next generation of GWU psychiatric residents. I am a graduate of a 3-year intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy training program through the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis and have attended several other psychotherapy seminars; to include training in CBT, DBT, mindfulness, suicide prevention and motivational interviewing. In the position of Lead Psychiatrist at the George Washington University Colonial Health Center, I treated undergraduate, graduate, law and medical students from across the world and the United States becoming specialized in the care of young adult and emerging adult populations. Serving the DC Foggy Bottom area for over 20 years, I am comfortable providing care to an international population and am very familiar with the special needs and concerns of the LGBTQ community. Most recently, I had the honor and privilege to serve our nation’s veterans as a staff psychiatrist at the Veterans Administration. I provided care for our veterans struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia and substance use disorders as well as elderly veterans with complex medical issues. Having worked in both primary care and mental health settings, I prioritize time to coordinate the treatment of my patients with their primary care providers, medical specialists and other mental health therapists.

Life Outside the Office

Originally from the farmlands of the Midwest, I am happy to call Maryland my home since 1998. I am a proud military spouse and live with my husband, two children and energetic Golden Labrador. I enjoy traveling, spending time outdoors, book clubs and attending theatre/music/fine art events with my amazing family and friends.
