I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Maryland and have been practicing for over 8 years. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety (including health-related anxiety, panic, social, and generalized anxiety) and other mood disorders, as well as adjustment to multiple life stressors and transitions, including those of a medical nature. I predominantly use cognitive behavioral (CBT) techniques to treat conditions such as anxiety, depressed mood, insomnia and others. This is an active, skills-based approach that requires patient participation between as well as in sessions. I focus on increasing active coping, improving daily functioning, and supporting independence and healthy adaptation. I support patients in making difficult lifestyle changes using motivational interviewing techniques that “meet you where you are” to enhance readiness for change.
I treat individuals throughout the lifespan, including adolescents, emerging adults, and older adults. I have the highest respect for individuals who seek treatment, and use a collaborative approach to treatment planning. I am a “real person” with clients and like to connect via humor while also providing evidence-based treatment.
In addition to therapy, I provide multiple kinds of assessments, including diagnostic, psychoeducational, immigration, and pre-surgical assessments.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Mass Communications at Washington & Lee University in Virginia and my Master’s and Doctorate at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have served in a supervisory role for graduate students learning assessment techniques and have taught several classes at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as co-authored numerous research papers in the area of prevention of substance use and other negative outcomes in adolescents. I also completed post-doctoral training and worked as a coordinator of public health programs at Loyola University Maryland’s college counseling center.
Life Outside the Office
I have 3 young children and enjoy spending time with family, reading (especially mysteries and thrillers), and trying new restaurants. After receiving my graduate training in Virginia, I lived for several years in Baltimore. I’m very happy to have made it all the way back to my hometown of Annapolis.
Dr. Mays works in the Annapolis location and provides telehealth services. She participates with following insurances: Medicare, Tricare, USFH, and JH EHP.
