Sarah Milam

I am a licensed psychologist in Maryland and have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults across a variety of presenting concerns including depression, anxiety, stress, academic challenges, attentional difficulties, family concerns, trauma, religious and spiritual concerns, and issues of identity development. I also have a background in psycho-educational assessment with adolescents and adults primarily focused on concerns related to ADHD and learning disorders. I use an integrative approach in my therapeutic work that incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapies with an interpersonal approach built on a strengths-based and multicultural framework. My goal is always to tailor my approach to what fits best for my client and their goals.

Professional Experience

I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park and my master’s degree in counseling psychology at Towson University before moving to Morgantown, West Virginia where I earned my doctorate in counseling psychology at West Virginia University. Therapeutically, I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in community mental health settings and university counseling centers. I have worked with people on a broad range of presenting concerns and enjoy learning about the unique lived-experiences and perspectives of each person. In addition to my therapeutic work, I also teach graduate courses at Towson University and West Virginia University focusing on topics such as counseling techniques and group counseling. I have presented at national and regional conferences and published articles related to parental divorce, posttraumatic growth, and identity concerns. In addition to my therapeutic work, I have extensive experience working in university academics and student-life, with a focus on leadership development, outdoor adventure, experiential learning, and academic support. I have developed programming to improve college students’ well-being, reduce isolation, and facilitate personal empowerment through outdoor adventure and experiential education both on college campuses, extended trips in the U.S., and in an international context.

Life Outside the Office

I was born and raised right outside of Annapolis, MD and have been glad to call it home for most of my life. I was also lucky enough to live in wild and wonderful West Virginia for six years. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors (especially on the water or in a forest), exploring new places, reading, gardening, or writing letters to friends.

Dr. Milam works in the Annapolis and Severna Park locations. She also provides telehealth services. She participates with following insurance: Tricare, USFH, and JH EHP.
