Ryan Shea, PsyD Candidate
I am a Maryland Psychology Associate working under the supervision of Dr. Kett. I have worked in a variety of settings, including outpatient mental health clinics, school psychology, and college counseling centers. I work with children, adolescents, and adults with concerns including depression, anxiety, identity concerns, adjustment and life transitions, grief and loss, and relationship issues. I am particularly passionate about my LGBTQ work, both in and out of therapy. I employ an integrative approach to mental health and wellness, utilizing psychodynamic, interpersonal, and emotion-focused approaches, with elements of cognitive behavioral therapy. I believe that lasting change is driven by a warm therapeutic relationship, emotional attunement, and the development of insight. As a therapist, my goal is to help you work toward a state of awareness, a sense of empowerment, and a feeling of fulfillment.
My clinical experience includes work in community clinics, grade schools, and colleges. I earned my B.S. in Psychology from the University of Washington in Seattle, my M.S. in Counseling at Loyola University of Maryland, and finally my Psy.D. from the George Washington University in Washington DC. Most recently, I worked as a college counselor at the United States Naval Academy and the University of Maryland Baltimore County Counseling Center. I have used my position to advocate for students who hold minority statuses, particularly children and young adults with sexual and gender minority identities.
About the Doc Outside the Office
I was born and raised in Baltimore, and am happy to have settled down once again in the area. In my free time, I enjoy reading, getting invested in a good TV show, and spending time with friends and family. As a former college swimmer, I can occasionally be found poolside trying to motivate myself to get back in shape, with varying degrees of success.
Dr. Shea works in our Severna Park location and has some hours in the Linthicum location. He will be starting in July of 2019.
