Carrie Cleveland

I am a Licensed Certified Social Worker, Clinical. My work is focused on helping people navigate challenging times in their lives. I have experience working with people who are dealing with anxiety, depression, gender identity, parenting challenges, life transitions, self-harming behaviors, and complicated medical diagnosis. I have training in cognitive behavioral therapy, gender affirming care, and dialectical behavioral therapy. I work from a systems approach, taking into account all the factors that affect people’s lives. I believe that the relationship between the therapist and the client can be powerful and therapeutic. I will work with you to identify goals and introduce skills to help you better understand how best to deal with the challenges you are facing at this time in your life.

Professional Experience

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in 2016. I then went on to the University of Maryland, Baltimore as an advanced standing student and received my Master’s Degree in Social Work in 2017. My clinical internship was completed at Chesapeake Bay Middle School in their regional program for children with emotional disabilities. After graduation, I began my career at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in the Psychiatric Mental Health Department. My role included staffing medical clinics, as well as working as a mental health clinician. This involved evaluating patients in the medical setting who presented with suicidal concerns. I spent three years working as a school social worker in Anne Arundel County, with most of that time dedicated to supporting students with IEPs.  I have extensive training in working with gender diverse clients and have presented to various associations on gender diversity and sexual health and wellness. I am currently pursuing a certificate in advanced training in affirmative therapy for transgender communities through Widener University. I have also completed Level one Gottman training in order to support couples.

My current full-time position is as a pediatric social worker at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.  In this role I support the dependents of active-duty service members as well as retirees.  This unique role has allowed me to develop competency in working with military connected families.    I work closely as a part of the medical team to support children when they are admitted to the hospital and when needs arise on the outpatient side.
