Sally Mays, PhD

I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Maryland and have been working in private practice for 5 years. Prior to that I worked with college students for several years. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety (panic, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety specifically) and other mood disorders, as well as adjustment to multiple life stressors and transitions. I predominantly use cognitive behavioral (CBT) techniques where appropriate. This is an active, skills-based approach that requires patient participation between as well as in sessions. I treat adolescents and adults and often include aspects of mindfulness in my work. I have the highest respect for the individuals who seek treatment with me, and use a collaborative approach to treatment planning. I focus on being a “real person” with my clients and connecting via humor if I can, while also providing evidence-based treatment.

In addition to therapy, I provide multiple kinds of assessments, including diagnostic, psychoeducational (e.g., ADHD and learning disabilities in individuals aged 17 and older), pre-surgical, and for prospective adoptive parents among others.

Professional Experience

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Mass Communications at Washington & Lee University in Virginia and my Master’s and Doctorate at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have served in a supervisory role for graduate students learning assessment techniques and have taught several classes at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as co-authored numerous research papers in the area of prevention of substance use and other negative outcomes in adolescents. I also have experience in substance abuse/motivational interviewing, severe mental illness, and family therapy.

Outside the office

I have 3 young children. My current “hobby” is parenting, but I seem to remember a time that I enjoyed reading (especially mysteries and thrillers), trying new restaurants, and going to wineries. After receiving my graduate training in Virginia, I lived for several years in Baltimore. I’m very happy to have made it all the way back to my hometown of Annapolis.
